The Road To Awakening

We all know about the tragic events that have been taking place lately in regards to race. Before I even get into anything I want to let it be known that I don't know everything. I'm not claiming to know everything. I'm just voicing my opinion....
I'm writing this to more or less voice my concerns. There's been a gradual increase in the amount of tension in African American communities in regards to race relations. More specifically in regards to police interactions with black people. The frequency of these tragic and violent events are stunning to say the least. But out of these situations I'm glad to see there's some awakening happening. I, myself. wasnt really one to pay attention to race as being an actual current issue. I wouldn't say that I didn't think racism existed anymore I just thought it was dying out.
So when my eyes were opened to the truth it was completely shocking.
As I watched more and more lives become hashtags, I remember feeling like there has to be some kind of answer or solution. And when I couldn't find one within myself or the people I talked to I started feeling hopeless. When this happens sometimes you can start building a false sense of security around yourself. Then you become desensetized to the events that happen because they aren't "directly affecting you".
This is a dangerous and heavily populated place to be.
The difference, I find, between our generation and the civil rights generation is the level of importance that we put on ourselves and our level of comfort. As long as our household is good we're willing to do or NOT do whatever we can to keep it that way. We may have a few things to say about these acts of violence but as long as we aren't directly effected by it the buck stops at the conversation. The civil rights era put justice and and equality before "personal comfort". Just imagine if people had that attitude during the bus boycotts and said " I agree in theory, but I need the bus to get to work".
There's just and overwhelming lack of unity. And before we're able to tackle the race issue, we have to tackle our unity issue......
