Everyday I meet the same client. The best way to describe her is natural and overwhelmed. She sits in my chair and proceeds to tell me how she has no idea what to do with her hair; it's just not growing; and she can't find any good products. As I listen to her tell me about the videos she's seen on YouTube I see something in her eyes. Something that tells me this is the last effort before she disappears into relaxer and sew in land. So I figured I would put together these tips that repeatedly come up. Just in case the person reading this needs to be talked off the ledge.....
Your curls are unique.....
Just like your fingerprint your curls are uniquely created for you. Although people ay have SIMILAR curls they ARE NOT THE SAME.
Moisture is key
Much like our bodies or even plants need water to survive, our hair is the same way. Moisturizing your hair can be done with water or products
Your hair will tell you what it needs
This may sound like a crazy idea but we should LISTEN TO OUR HAIR! Often times our hair is the first sign that we need to adjust or add to our regimen (such as lack of moisture, protein, or in need of a trim)
CURL TYPING IS NOT LAW
As I said before each person's hair is different. In any one head of hair there can be multiple textures. So while curl typing may be helping in discovering products or regimens it is not the end all be all law.
Find a routine and stick to it
In the natural community it's pretty easy to fall into the "product junky" category. With soo many new "natural focused" product lines it's only normal to want to try them out. But here's the thing..... In order to know what works for your hair you have to give it time to react to the product. Even though sometimes a one time use can give you an immediate negative response, the goal is to build a regimen. So slow it down to find out what works
Low manipulation is key
Constantly doing elaborate styling can do more harm than good. Constant tension on the hair follicles is not good. Try alternating longer lasting styles, such as twist outs etc., to make sure no unnecessary stress is being put on the hair
Love your hair and it will love you back
Yes you will have "bad hair days" and days where your hair "just won't do right".....it's life! We all go through it. Just take a deep breath and don't get frustrated because at the end of the day it's a journey. Enjoy the ride!
